When a Believer is Faced With an Unplanned Pregnancy, "Alexis's" Story

Two weeks ago “Alexis” came on board our mobile unit thanks to her co-worker, “Natalie”.  We met Alexis earlier than our normal shift started because her world seemed to be crashing in on her and she wanted to come on as soon as possible.  Alexis shared with Natalie that she was pregnant and planned to abort the baby so Natalie directly called our CEO, Amber, as a trusted friend for advice.  Together they were able to talk through a plan for Alexis’ and an ultrasound and nurse consultation was the next step needed.

Alexis has a strong faith in Christ and works in a Christian leadership role.  Her husband passed away 8 years ago and as a widow she has 4 children and is also grandparent.  Since her husband’s death Alexis was slow to date and the only man she dated was “Thad”.  One thing led to another and Alexis found herself pregnant.  When she shared the news with Thad that she was pregnant he told her he thought she was trying to trap him.  Thad got married to someone else the very next day!  Alexis was heart –broken by Thad’s response and his new marriage—how could all this be happening?

In an effort to move on Alexis wanted to have an abortion to get closure in hopes of helping her heart heal but God was at work in her.  Her faith in Christ continued to unnerve her choice to have an abortion.  She knew that scripture said, “thou shall not kill” and she felt very torn because she just wanted the pregnancy to be over and wanted her pain to stop.  Alexis was in a dark place those first days of her pregnancy and even had suicidal thoughts.  Alexis was broken and overwhelmed by it all!

We met with Alexis for two and a half hours and there was barely a moment without tears streaming down her face but at the end of the visit, we had a plan for her next two weeks, and she said she felt much better. Her ultrasound showed her being very early in the pregnancy which warranted her coming back later for another ultrasound to truly confirm the pregnancy.  In that two week wait for her ultrasound the plan was simple:  1) take care of herself with 3 meals or nutrition shakes per day and go to bed at a reasonable time; 2) text Amber each morning, Natalie each night; 3) explore the option of adoption; 4) allow First Choice to connect her with another mom who had gone through an unplanned pregnancy later in life, and, 5) wait for the second ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy was even progressing.  She was to take one day at a time and stay close to Natalie and those who were supportive encouragers.

Each morning her text messages got more upbeat and we could sense her gaining strength and putting her trust in the Lord.  When we met at Starbucks to introduce her to the other single mom, she simply asked “does it get better” and we stepped through the hearty answer of “yes, but it happens over time”.

This past Friday we met at the ObGyn’s office next door to First Choice where she said that she was definitely planning to have the baby.  Natalie, Amber, and Alexis were elated with joy to see her almost 9 week baby and to hear his or her heartbeat pumping strong.

Many of our Facebook group had prayed hard for Alexis and followed this story as it unfolded.  Find us on Facebook to join the prayer team and watch God work in women like Alexis!!!!
